Head Grower/Horticulturist

We are looking for a knowledgable Horticulturist/Head Grower to manage our annuals program. Excellent customer service skills are a must, as well as the ability to multi-task.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in the field of Horticulture, 2-3 years field experience.
  • Strong Leadership, Management & Administrative, and Communication skills
  • Ability to delegate tasks and give direction
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, lift 50 lbs unassisted
  • Knowledge of growing plants in a greenhouse environment

Other Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of plant material usable in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-3
  • Knowledge of fertilizers and pesticides and how to use them.
  • Knowledge of basic operation of a cash register.
  • ME State Pesticide Applicators License a plus
  • Knowledge of loaders and other machinery is a plus.

This position is seasonal with potential for year-round employment. Anticipated starting date is Late February/Early March.

Garden Center Associates and Assistants

These jobs include a variety of tasks relating to the upkeep and maintenance of the nursery grounds, greenhouses and retail building. The responsibilities of these positions may include:

  • Maintenance of plant materials including watering, fertilizing, weeding, pruning and pest control.
  • Maintenance/upkeep of the greenhouse facility.
  • Planting seeds and/or plugs, making cuttings, separation or division of stock.
  • Labeling and stocking materials.
  • Retail Store operations including cleaning, stocking, merchandise display setup, selling products, customer service and cash handling.

Qualifications

  • Good health with adequate strength and the endurance to perform tasks involving lifting and moving heavy objects, standing, kneeling and crouching.
  • Ability to work independently and properly complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and other departments.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Basic knowledge of greenhouse operations.
  • Basic knowledge of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs and their characteristics.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic, honest, reliable, shows initiative.

Educational Requirements

  • Assistants: High school diploma, GED, or currently high school junior or senior.
  • Associates: High school diploma or GED.

Additional Requirements

  • Assistants: Prior retail and/or industry experience helpful.
  • Associates: Prior retail and/or industry experience.

Garden Center Yard Worker

Responsibilities include:

  • Loading heavy and bulk products for customers.
  • Maintenance and operation of irrigation system.
  • Hand watering of nursery stock.
  • Maintenance needs of a growing and expanding garden center operation.

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
